What software are you attempting to use for scanning? Most MFPs will scan directly into Image Capture. If you're willing to pay for quality scanning software, though, I would highly recommend VueScan from Hamrick. |

You haven't given anyone enough information to help you. Sorry.
For starters, you haven't told us what you've tried, or how it failed. TIP: Verbatim error messages are helpful. |

The HP web site lists the drivers for the printer on MacOS X 10.3 and 10.4 as well as the Photosmart features:

There's no mention of the scanner being supported on MacOS X which is a common problem with combo devices (scanner, fax, printer). Your alternatives are limited. You can buy a 3rd-party scanner program like Vuescan which proportedly works with your device:

I am using Vuescan with an unsupported Canon FS4000 and it works fine with my Intel iMac running OSX. |

I've got one connected to an iMac running 10.5.4. Worked from the first day, after installing the driver from the included CD.

This one works at least up through Leopard.
You can choose between a number of destinations for scans including TIF or PDF to Preview or various Adobe applications.

But not needed in this case. |

Or better... Download the full and newest version of the original software for the C-5280 all-in-one. This latest updated software now also is fully OS X 10.5.x compatible. and it includes both OCR (ReadIRIS 9 Pro) and picture scanning software.
