Does anyone know if the latest/greatest version of Safari 3.1.x will install and run on a PPC Mac running Tiger 10.4.10. I know Apple states that Safari 3 is suitable for 10.4.11 or higher but sometimes system requirements are set for what an app has been tested under, not necessarily what would work.

Apple doesn't say "suitable for 10.4.11". Apple says it REQUIRES 10.4.11 or higher.

Download Safari 3 and try to install it. Report back on your findings.

And meanwhile, what's your aversion to updating to 10.4.11?

why not download the 10.4.11 comboUpdate and get your machine completely up-to-date? - This update also includes Safari 3.x... - And 10.4.11 is quite a lot faster than 10.4.10.

So probably it will... I'm running ver. 3.1.2 on my Tiger 10.4.11 on both my MacPro and on two different Quicksilver...

Look, breyfogle, even I have gone to .11 and I am usually the last to go all modern like. I'm on a PPC Mac.

I'm running Safari 3.1.2 under Tiger (10.4.11) with no problems.

Is 10.4.11 Intel only? I would be very surprised to discover that. I've got 10.5.4 on a couple of PPC Macs. (And I really hope that the rumors about snow leopard are false).

Is 10.4.11 Intel only?

there are separate ppc and intel builds of 10.4.

so would a lot of people:)

leopard is universal, one of it's most useful features.

if i had to guess, they're probably true. intel macs are already the majority and in a year, they'll be even more so. apple could make it universal, but there may not be a whole lot of benefit in doing so. and since 'there are no new features' in snow leopard, powerpc users won't be missing anything by not upgrading. How could it be if I have it? Are you trying to flatter me, Jeffrey, and attribute me with Wizardly powers? <g>

I'm running Safari 3.1.2 under Tiger (10.4.11) with no problems.

But he said 10.4.10, not 10.4.11, and the specs for Safari 3.x say 10.4.11 is required.

The thing about Safari is that it's not an entirely standalone application. The application is mostly a wrapper for the WebKit framework, which is practically an OS component (so we can all stop making fun of Windows for having IE so deeply ingrained in the system). That's why upgrading Safari requires a reboot.
Because of this, it's harder to make new versions of Safari compatible with older versions of the OS, and Apple hasn't bothered.

And meanwhile, what's your aversion to updating to 10.4.11?

Some months back, I actually downloaded 10.4.11, but before I installed it I did some web-searching. There seemed to be a larger than normal number of people for whom upgrading to 4.11 caused serious problems. IMO, OS upgrades are major events and in the end I decided that the (admittedly) small risk was not worth the very minor benefits to be gained. Eventually, some app that I really do need will get broken by not having the latest OS. When that happens I will upgrade to whatever OS version is current.
