I want to establish video chat with a Windows Vista user. I normally use iChat or Skype but he is unable to use iChat and unwilling to risk installing Skype in case it disturbs Vista. Here I could make a suitable comment about the average Windows user but I won't.
On Vista he uses MSN for video chat and instant messaging. How can I contact him?

I can use text on Adium but it has no video facility.
I tested out Mercury on two iMacs using newly set up MSN accounts but it does not do audio only video.

Which programs would anyone suggest that will give be video and audio via an MSN account.

I have a 24" iMac and a 20" G5 iMac both using Mac OS X 10.5.4. Both have built in iSight cameras.

Why don't you just use the Mac version of MSN???

Well, the lack of the video capability he mentioned several times would be reason number one...

You might try to convince your friend to switch to AIM. From what I remember, AIM video is supported by more services and software than MSN. For once, iChat supports it.

I would use MSN but I can't work out how to use the iSight with it. Also the MSN website states

"You cannot make audio or video calls from a personal account or to contacts on the Windows Live, Yahoo, or AOL networks."
Any help on how to set up MSN for a video and audio chat would be most welcome.

Have fun, Hermie

September 15, 1996

Just downloaded and installed aMSN. As with MSN itself I can get video but I can't get audio. I can see the caller but I can't hear them. It seems rather pointless to have video and no audio.
To reiterate the problem. I want to communicate with video AND audio to a PC user who has MSN. To test this out I am using two MSN accounts to try to communicate between two Macs. All I get is video and no audio. I have tried MSN software, aMSN and Mercury, all three give video but not audio.

Remove 'Elle-Kabong' to reply

Because it does video only and I would like audio as well.

Yes aMSN does support video and I can use it to send and receive with another iMac, but it will not do audio AND video.

He will not switch as he is frightened to risk anything that may disturb Vista. I can appreciate his fear of tampering with Windows.
The problem would be solved if he switched to Skype or an AIM based account. But he will not attempt the switch.

I would have said "using Windows", rather than "tampering with Windows", but what do I know?

But to be constructive: I recall that there are IM integrators, programs that let you communicate with a variety of IM programs in a single interface, and I believe there are some that work on a Mac. Perhaps one of those would work as you desire...
Disclosure: I *never* use IM, so the above qualifies as hearsay only - but if I'm not too far off, it might help Smile

Tell him to just conquer his fears install Skype anyway. It works fine under Vista IME.
